Putting Olive Oil On Clippers

Becoming a teacher-researcher: a matter of patience and perseverance

Achieving be a teacher-researcher is not an easy task. It is a journey that often takes between five and ten years, sometimes longer. And those years are full years: research, teaching, editing files. Not forgetting, of course, to find funding. Part One: Master of the thesis. Your search ends

master, your choice is made it will be the thesis. Your topic was designed upstream, in relation teachers. And already, the direction is crucial. The theme of the research, teachers who will accompany him, but also notes master of memory and quality will determine whether you can access funding royal first three years of the thesis: the allocation of research and mentoring. Which should blend in September 2009 in the new device doctoral contract.

2000 euros gross per month

"To get a research grant, the applicant must file an application stating his thesis project and master thesis. We then interviewed. The selected student gets funding of 1650 euros gross monthly to conduct its research. This grant is renewable annually for a maximum of 3 years ", describes Arnaud Libel (1), Doctor of Social Science, formed at the University of Paris-Dauphine.
allowance provides access to coaching, that is to say, a 10-day training in the profession of teacher and researcher, as well as hours of paid lessons. For 64 hours of supervised work or 96 hours of practical work, either 2 or 3 hours of instruction per week, the monitor collects € 335.39 gross per month. As allocation, mentoring may not exceed 3 years. A Teaching assistant wins for a total slightly less than 2000 euros gross per month. "Either substantially the same as a lecturer (2) early career! "Libel resumed Arnaud who believes that" the beginning of the thesis, when one is recipient-monitor is truly the royal period for the young researcher. "

modeled on the theoretical duration of a thesis, these funds do not take into account the facts: the doctorate is often obtained in 4 or 5 years, sometimes more. "The term is often longer in the social sciences, where we work on outdoor courts, with numerous interviews, sometimes abroad. Called hard sciences, working in the lab often allows greater efficiency in time management, "says Anais Marin, PhD in political science, made at the IEP of Paris.

A new system for the 2009 academic year

The doctoral contract proposed by Valerie Pécresse allow doctoral students to be funded for four years instead of three. The contract, which should replace the old system as of autumn 2009, marks both a rupture and continuity. If the student agrees to perform activities other than research, including teaching, he could receive a higher salary to 2000 euros gross minimum set by the state. The student will in theory able to negotiate his salary with the university.
As for the contract itself, it will be a CSD with a three-year trial period of three months, renewable. The PhD student will change in the contract with a public university modeled on the legal status of current contracts in the private sector. It may also be terminated if he is not the case.
What

without funding?

Every year, grants or research contracts to be offered in 2009 will not be sufficient to fund all holders of masters who wish to make a thesis. Those whose cases are not selected have the choice between abandoning the idea of doing research or rely on other sources of compensation.

What are these other sources of potential earnings? The more wealthy are financed by their parents, others may get based fellowships, grants for starting a year abroad (to work in a lab, do the ground) or do odd jobs. These are not necessarily McJobs: PhD students work out, for example, to sell to business studies close to the subject of their thesis.

Staying within the framework of the university, it is also possible to make hours of teaching as a substitute teacher, provided they are under the age of 28 years. Temporary staff contractors can make up to 96 hours of tutorials or 144 hours of work. "But these courses, paid about 40 euros gross per hour, are less paying the same hours in mentoring ... and they are paid once every 6 months! "Says Arnaud Libel.

Less posts ATER

If you're doing well and that your thesis is advanced, you may, within one year of the defense, claim a position of temporary teaching and research (ATER) (3). You will require a file and candidates as part of a national competition at the time of recruitment campaigns. It is then that universities choose their ATER.

There are positions ATER full-time and part-time (half-ATER). A full-time Lecturer performs 128 hours of courses or 192 hours of supervised work or 288 hours of practical work per year. A part-time Lecturer, at a minimum, perform 64 hours of courses, 96 hours of tutorials or 144 hours of practical work per year. A full-time Lecturer affects about 2000 euros gross cons 1400 for a part-time. "The positions of half-ATER are rare, however, reducing the supply of jobs and increased selectivity," says Arnaud Libel.

During that time, naturally you will finish your thesis, because the defense approach. The problem is the same for those who have no jobs ATER: the end of the thesis, the editorial work is very demanding and requires continuous operating ranges. Therefore, you will first have accumulated a small pool that allows you, during this critical period, to remain full time on your thesis. Otherwise, you will enter a vicious circle: deferral funding problem, deferral funding problem ... But we bet

that after a few years, having provided a lot of toil and tears, your thesis is finally closed and sustained. You must now find a position.

A culmination. Relief. Champagne, canapés and congratulations are rewarding a long breath. But no sooner have you had time to savor the completion of your thesis you need to tackle a new project: a job as a lecturer (1).

First step: you must obtain the qualification to participate in recruitment campaigns. The National Council of Universities (CNU), which manages this process by the current system. You must be a file containing two copies of your thesis, a scientific CV which details the work and publications, your diploma, and articles you have published.

Please register by Galaxy portal, which also campaigns for recruiting faculty members. Your file is for two reporters who, on the basis of thesis and work, decide whether or not you qualify. "It is postulated by section, eg Section 4 (political science). But better apply immediately to several sections to improve his chances, "Arnaud advocates Libel (2), Doctor of Social Sciences. Provided, of course, the break is consistent with the thesis: a doctorate in social science does not a candidate in computer science.

"I got the qualification in 2007 in political science and Russian with my thesis on St. Petersburg," says Anais Marin, Doctor of Political Science, formed at the IEP of Paris. Remember that applying for this qualification requires expenses. Would do to print a thesis of 800 pages and to send it.

A dozen interviews across France

If all goes well, the two reporters are giving you the qualification, at least in the section most relevant to your thesis topic. "If you are not qualified in the first year, you should try again," advises Arnaud Libel, "but if you do not always within 2 or 3 times, you should seriously consider changing! . And that's not all: if you pick up the qualification, know that it is valid only four years (renewable). Suffice to say that here too the time is ticking to participate in campaigns to recruit teachers and researchers.

To find a position, the qualified doctors learn about the Galaxy portal and postulate through this site. You send a file with your resume scientific articles and on this basis, the universities decide whether or not you audition. For the audition, "you go before a board composed of professors and lecturers, it was twenty minutes to present his / her course project," explains Arnaud Libel. These recruitment drives are often challenging and costly. "The year I got my job, I spent a dozen interviews across France," recalls Odile Henry, now a lecturer in sociology Paris-Dauphine, "it was the race I had one hearing day. I was unemployed and I had no money for fees: airplanes, taxis, hotels, clothes ... I had to borrow € 1,500 to my bank to cover my expenses! . Fortunately, his efforts were rewarded as it was ranked at the University of Nantes and Paris-Dauphine.

But the adventure does not always end with a happy ending. "Beware of local university, that is to say, the strong preference of universities for local candidates, "says Anais Marin when she was auditioned at the University of Lille, has felt a sharp positive attitude of the university president for the local ATER. It is the latter who finally got the job. "It is assumed for both positions of faculty and research fellows at the CNRS, there was no choice given the scarcity of jobs," says Nicolas Hubé, lecturer at the Centre for Research Policy Sorbonne (Paris 1).

The solution of the post-doc

Recruitment campaigns are held once a year. Therefore, you will never find funding if you were not recruited on the first try. If you have not yet been temporary teaching and research (ATER) (3), you can still apply for and obtain one or two years, a position that will allow you to stay within the university. You can also make shifts, that is to say, the replacements, but this requires to be younger than 28 years. Yet we rarely finishes his thesis before 26 or 27 years. Alternatively, do a postdoc in France or abroad. The postdoc is a fixed term contract which can last from several months to several years and you can also perform well in France and abroad. These contracts are sometimes better paid than the starting salary of a lecturer. This may be worth, provided you do not lose contact with your network of contacts in the French academic world. It is also possible to obtain contracts for collaborative research, with the National Research Agency (ANR), but "the files are cumbersome to mount," says Arnaud Libel.

Alternatively, find a position of responsibility in study the parastatal or teach in private. Libel Arnaud, who tried his luck in small business schools, was paid "between 30 and 40 euros gross per hour, knowing that an hour lesson is on average 5 or 6 hours. However, it is necessary that you allow time for a doctor without a position to continue to publish one day hope to settle down in a university. It also means that you must go to seminars at your expense.

a last resort, if you held a position as Lecturer in advance, you will have unemployment benefits. "We are full of hypocrisy System, "Anais Marin plague," the allocation of re-employment is diverted funding for young researchers with the tacit approval of institutions! In short, the young doctor office waiting is often in precarious balance, and must hold until they find a job. If for Odile Henry and Nicolas Hubé, the story ended, Arnaud Libel, he hopes to get a position soon to avoid having to ask for a conversion. As for Anais Marin, she made a cross in France and now operates his talents as a researcher and teacher in Helsinki.

NB

(1) The name was changed
(2) Lecturer is the name under which to begin a career as a teacher-researcher.
(3) A ATER is a teacher-researcher unlicensed, recruited for a fixed term, which has the same type of function as a lecturer.
