Top Shanghai: a French university in the first forty Time
The verdict is out. The Shanghai ranking of the 500 best universities in research has been published for 2009. Officially presented on November 4, it is now and already available online. Jiao Tong University for the first time accepted a French in his "top 40" . Pierre et Marie Curie (Paris VI) arrives as 40 e , improving his score by two places compared to 2008. Another positive development, the University of Paris-Sud (Paris XI) passes the 49 th at the 43 th place, jumping quite exceptional. Ecole Normale Superieure (ENS) completes this winning trio by winning a 70 th place and thus improving his score by two places 2008.Entre since 2003, when the first Chinese ranking, and this year, these institutions have respectively won 25 seats, 29 seats or more than thirty to the ENS.
FIFTH NATION
This classification, based exclusively on criteria relating to research in the field of sciences and management sciences, is still largely dominated by the U.S.. Harvard, Stanford, Berkeley confiscate, in fact, the first three places in the world rankings. More generally, the U.S. occupying 17 of the 20 top spots, leaving crumbs for traditional British that are Cambridge (4th) and Oxford (10th) and University of Tokyo in Japan.
Behind the trio of Parisian Other French are spared the game Strasbourg, Paris VII, Paris and Grenoble-I-V installed between the 100 and 200 e e place. And in total, 23 universities which are hexagonal in the top 500 ranked in the world, positioning France at the 5 th place of nations.
The 2009 vintage of this interest lies in the specific rankings published in five major disciplines: chemistry, physics, mathematics, computer science and economics and management. And this detail makes quite clear the strengths and weaknesses of the French university. In mathematics, the traditional field of excellence French research, seven universities occupy the first 100 seats. Princeton stand behind Paris-XI (6 e) and Fields Medals, Paris-VI (7 e); Paris Dauphine (35 e) and ENS (47 e). Beyond the 50 th place, but before the 100 th can find Polytechnique, Rennes-I, Strasbourg and Aix-Marseille-I. "In mathematics or physics, such a classification allows us to validate the key points on which we work" ensures Couarraze Guy, President of Paris-Sud.
In physics, Paris-Sud peak at 19 e of a ranking dominated Harvard, when the ENS (34 e), Grenoble and Paris-I-VI disciplinary complete this list. In chemistry, it arises in Strasbourg French premiere. With his Nobel Prize, Jean-Marie Lehn, the largest university in the East moved to the 15 th place ranking again crushed by Harvard.
side weaknesses, do not shine or hexagonal in economics and management or computer science. The Insead business school in Fontainebleau (40th) and University of Toulouse-I (between 76 and 100 e e seats) are the only ones to shine in economics. And Computing, no French happens in "top 100" . And for good reason, in these disciplines, research is done outside the university.
